The Golden State Warriors are NBA Champions for the second time in three years, while Kevin Durant won Finals MVP and his first title. The Oakland crowd and brutal lineup of Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green were way too much for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The first ever NBA Finals trilogy ended 129-120 in Game 5. This game was held from embarrassment by the ridiculous numbers of Lebron James and Kyrie Irving.
Lebron ended with 32 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. He’s the first player to average a triple double through a Finals series. He averaged 33.6 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
On the flipside, he’s now won only 3 of 8 trips to the Finals and the Warriors look set to dominate for the next few years.
Cavs point guard Kyrie Irving had an incredible series. His 29.4 points per game confirmed that he’s a top 10 player in this league. Perhaps the greatest finisher at the rim. Amazing, confounding handles and clutch shooting for days. They just ran into a better team.
It’s Durant and Curry’s league now. They’ll get a lot of hate. Plenty of complaining about “superteams”, taking the easy road and piling on to beat Lebron. KD joined the team that beat him in 7 games. Cupcakes. All those things.
Yes, seeing Durant and OKC take on the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals last year was incredible. We like to see greatness challenged. However, I have an issue with acting like the Warriors somehow cheated.
What about the Warriors?
They played within the rules. They drafted Curry, Klay and Draymond and made smart moves to clear cap space and sign Andre Iguodala in 2013.
Then, when the NBA salary cap spiked last season, their salary structure allowed them to add Kevin Durant. Any team would’ve signed KD if they could.
Don’t be hating on the team that did things wisely and built through the draft.
What about Lebron’s Cavs?
Oh, the team that received four #1 NBA Draft picks over 11 years? The team that Lebron only returned to once they had Kyrie Irving and #1 Draft pick Andrew Wiggins (flipped into Kevin Love)?
You mean the team that’s since sold off all future draft assets to lock in an expensive roster that can’t compete with the Warriors?
Don’t excuse incompetence and greediness. They’re projected $28 million over the salary cap with no draft picks. Lebron says he’s never been on a superteam. You did this to yourself, bud.
