Have you looked at a calendar recently? Santa’s almost ready to embark on his annual round the world trip. Unless you’re my mother, chances are you didn’t finish your Christmas shopping in March. So, what are you gonna do?
You have two options. You could either head to Westfield and drop a whole bunch of cash on generic gift cards, or you could stay local and buy unique, one-off, affordable pieces of art from some of Sydney’s best independent designers.
If the latter seems more appealing, here are the best upcoming Christmas markets in Sydney to score the best deals.
Australian Technology Park Exhibition Hall
Friday 9th December 6pm – 10pm
Saturday 10th December 10am – 6pm
Sunday 11th December 10am – 5pm
This Friday night, The Finders Keepers Sydney market kicks off at 6pm at the Australian Technology Park Exhibition Hall in Everleigh and continues through the weekend. This will be the market’s 9th and biggest year yet, featuring over 200 independent art and design stalls, including jewellery by Antipastel, swimwear by South Coast label Camp Cove Swim and art prints by Eggpicnic.
Ground floor, 619 Elizabeth Street, Redfern
Sat 10th Dec 2016, 10am – 4pm
Just down the road from Finders Keepers is this super exclusive one day only vintage clothing sale!
The vintage wardrobe and prop hire shop is relocating, and they are doing one hell of a spring/summer clean. There’s so much to score here, from vintage Chanel, Valentino and Gucci, 50’s and 60’s jackets, 90s grunge, costume jewellery, hats, gloves, shoes—the possibilities are endless. Best part is everything is one of a kind, so there’s no chance anyone else will steal your gift glory by doubling up.
Glebe Public School, Glebe Point Rd, Glebe NSW 2037
Saturdays 10am – 4pm
Whilst these markets are on year round, Glebe market organisers have amped up their number of local designers for the festive season. On top of the usual fashion and antique stalls, the next few weekend’s markets will boast a bunch of gift options by local designers including handmade soaps, leather bound journals, handbags, and other life hack gadgets like those magnetic key ring things everybody keeps going on about.
Rouse Hill Town Centre
Saturday Dec 10 and Sunday Dec 11, 10 – 4pm
Over the hills (literally) and not so far away, Sydney Boutique Markets await. The market’s intention since it’s inception (say that three times) has always been to help emerging designers get exposure in a retail environment, and for many of them, this will be their first foray in a pop-up space. Which means you’ll snap up some unique presents before the rest of the world catches on to their designs. They’re expecting some 30,000 people to pass through the gates this weekend, so prep for some crowds and bring some cash!
245 Wilson St, Eveleigh NSW 2015
Friday 23 December, 4 – 9pm
This one’s for you guys who’ve really left things till the last minute. If you’re still umm-ing and ahh-ing about what to get your brother who is actually so annoying he doesn’t deserve a present anyway, but you have to because he’s family, Carriageworks Twilight Christmas Market is here to save the day. There will be heaps of delicious food vendors (buy him a pig and see if he gets the hint?), but if hampers aren’t really your thing, there will be plenty of other gift ideas on offer, like clothes by Romance Was Born and Bandsome, accessories by Studio Elke, vinyl by Rolling Records, and fun jewellery by Haus of Dizzy and so much more.
