We’ve all been there. Eyes square on the ATM screen, 6:27pm on a Tuesday. You’ve had your heart and stomach set on a schnitzel all day, but your bank account has other plans.
It’s decided you’ll starve. ‘Insufficient Funds’ flashes back from the screen, mocking your hunger. What do you do? You get to know the nightly local pub deals, and you make dinner plans based on where the cheapest steak or wing bucket will be.
Here’s our suggested weekday meal plan that’ll have you eating like a king on the pay of a peasant.
MONDAY: Burger and a Beer $16
The Duck Inn, 74 Rose St, Chippendale NSW 2008
The Duck Inn Pub and Kitchen is 210 metres from Sydney Uni, so you can practically roll yourself into the warm, delicious buns of their signature beef burger without having to lift a toe. Then, pull up a stool next to the resident Korat (chill cat above) and enjoy your complimentary cold one as you discuss the pros and cons of CatCams. This entry is the fanciest on this list, but a worthy occasional option.
TUESDAY: $16 Schnitzels
Courthouse Hotel, 202 Australia Street, Newtown NSW 2042
From 6-9pm, the Courty in Newtown will take your $20 note and return with $4 change and the best tasting chicken schnitzel in town. Sure, maybe you know of a cheaper schnitzel somewhere, but you don’t know of a more delicious schnitzel anywhere. The portions are generous and the gravy is good. You could even split it with a friend. What more do you need?
WEDNESDAY: $10 Pastas
Harold Park Hotel, 70A Ross St, Glebe NSW 2037
Sydney has gone a bit mad with their restaurant prices. I went to an Italian restaurant in Darlinghurst the other day and they were asking $34 for ravioli. We all know how much pasta costs, and it ain’t that. Harold Park Hotel know you know what’s up, so they’re serving it to you straight: $10 for a bowl of delicious tomato pappardelle chicken pasta from 5-9PM on hump days.
THURSDAY: $10 1kg Buckets of Bourbon BBQ Wings
Toxteth Hotel Glebe, 345 Glebe Point Rd, Sydney NSW 2037
Yes, you have read this headline correctly, and there is not much more I can add that will make this any more enticing. 6-9PM. 1kg. See you Thursday.
FRIDAY: $10 Steak
The Royal, 370 Abercrombie St, Darlington NSW 2008
The week was long, but you made it to the end. You’ve stomached a burger, chicken schnitzel, pasta, and 1kg of wings, and somehow you’re still hungry. You deserve a steak. And where better to devour one but The Royal on Abercrombie for a tenner. While you’re at it, enter the monster meat raffle so you’re covered for the weekend. Or maybe just eat a salad?
