Shaquille O’Neal. The Big Shamrock. The Real Deal. The Shaq Diesel. Man of many talents, master of them all. He stole our hearts on the basketball court, but it’s what he’s been doing since then that has really solidified his position as a certified legend.
Most recently, Shaq appeared as the special guest on Jimmy Fallon’s recurring Lip Sync Battle segment of The Tonight Show. As we all learned from Kazaam, Shaq isn’t really a natural in front of the camera. Still, you have to love the guy for trying, and trying and trying. But his performance on The Tonight Show may be his most convincing to date, and it’s all because he isn’t trying to act. Instead, he’s just being his big old goofy, charming self, and it’s impossible to wipe the grin from your face as he duets “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Jimmy.
But it’s not just a one-off TV appearance that has me all riled up. Did you know that Shaq also DJed Tomorrowland last year? That’s right—he plays under the moniker DJ Diesel. He got into DJing as a teenager and continued it as a hobby whilst in the NBA. Since his retirement, Shaq’s dusted off the turntables and started playing nightclubs, as well as starting a live streaming app called Shaq Fu Radio (I know, best name ever.) Apparently he was introduced to Tomorrowland by his girlfriend, Laticia, and when he played, he bought his kids along to watch.
It’s a rare thing to witness: people getting cooler with age. But Shaq is doing it. And if you’re still not convinced, let me mention these three golden words: Curb Your Enthusiasm. That’s right, Shaq starred in an episode where Larry accidentally trips him from his courtside seat and Shaq winds up in hospital. It’s worth checking out the whole episode because Shaq really shines throughout, but here he is excelling at falling painfully on a hard surface. Seriously, is there anything the guy can’t do?
