Things are looking rosy in the Spanish capital right now, with Real Madrid in the ascendancy over their eternal rivals Barcelona.
Since taking over 18 months ago, manager (and top 5 all-time footballer) Zinedine Zidane has won seven titles and lost seven games. Catch that?
HE’S WON AS MANY TROPHIES AS HIS DEFEATS IN TWO SEASONS!
Not normal, friends.
After beating Barcelona 3-1 in the first leg at the Camp Nou, Cristiano Ronaldo was banned for five matches for shoving the referee.
No worries, step forward 21-year-old Marco Asensio in the 4th minute of the second match, scoring from 35 yards with an early contender for goal of the season. Karim Benzema made it 2-0 and 5-1 on aggregate a half hour later, and the match was totally over.
Real Madrid are a fantastic, dazzling side right now. Even Welsh forward Gareth Bale might be expendable due to the rise of Asensio.
Meanwhile, the former lords of world football Barcelona are in a slight dip. Amazing considering they have Messi, Suarez and Iniesta in their team. Neymar has vacated the left wing for $200 million from Paris St. Germain, and the Catalan club are scrambling to assemble an Avengers-style revenge squad to strike back.
Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is a major target, and he’s doing his part by handing in a transfer request the day before the Premier League began. However, it may take more than the Brazilian midfielder’s magic to catch up to Zidane’s Real Madrid.
