Draw Four? How about High Five?
It’s one of the best games ever invented, and one of the most appealing things about Uno is that everyone seems to know how to play. Nobody ever teaches you Uno – the rules appear in your head one day and next minute you’re dropping multiple Draw Fours on your cousin until she cries. It’s beautiful. But what if we told you there were other ways to play? Check out these alternative rules and see what you reckon.
You’re not allowed to say “sorry” at any time. If you do, pick up two cards from the discard pile. (If you try to get around this by saying “My apologies” or something similar, pick up three.)
It’s not what you think. Everyone keeps their clothes on, but everyone’s cards are face-up on the table in front of them. So you know who’s got what, and can plan your plays.
If you have to ask…
Every time you ask if it’s your turn, you have to draw a card (whether it actually is your turn or not).
Whenever someone plays a 5, everyone has to slap the discard pile like they’re playing Snap. Last one in has to draw two cards.
If someone plays the exact same card you have in your hand – say, a red 3 – you can throw yours in immediately and it becomes your turn. Take too long and you miss your chance, though.
Whenever someone plays a 0 of any colour, everyone passes their hand to the right. Make sure you say “Uno” if you get handed a single card, or you have to pick up!
BONUS: Use a normal deck of cards to play
There’s a very Uno-like game called Switch that you can play if those bright coloured cards aren’t available. Draw seven cards each and try to get rid of them all before your opponents, following either suit or number when it’s your turn. Oh, and instead of saying “Uno”, you knock on the table when you only have one card left.
Here’s what the special cards do:
A: Draw one
2: Draw two
3: Draw three
[If you can match one of these when they’re played on you, you pass the pain on to the next player. Eg. If someone plays a 3 on you and you can play a 3 yourself, the next person has to draw 6… unless they have a 3 as well, in which case someone is picking up 9 cards. Brutal.]
7: Skip the next player’s turn
J: Wild card – change suit to whatever you want
Q: Reverse order of play
