It’s truly extraordinary what a single enamel pin fastened to a denim jacket can reveal about its wearer.
If you’re standing in line at the supermarket and someone in front of you has Larry David’s head pinned to their collar, you know they will not tolerate a chat and cut and are probably worth befriending.
Australian designer Georgia Perry is the maker of such pins, and her enamel creations of your favourite TV characters and pop artists like Larry, Oprah, Prince, Beyonce and Rihanna have taken Australia by storm.
Her accessories empire has now grown to include jewellery, patches, keyrings, socks, bags and more. We asked Perry how her career got started, the process of her pin production, and who really runs the world—Bey or RiRi.
Did you know you wanted a career in design from an early age?
Always. I grew up in the country and pretty much my whole life was spent colouring in and making things. I didn’t know then that those kind of things could turn into a career, but I’m glad it did!
What is the process of designing and creating your pins?
Everything begins as a sketch on paper, then I scan them into the computer to trace and digitally colour them. Selecting Pantone colours for the different coloured enamel (especially skin tones!) is one of the trickiest parts to get right. We work with a really good manufacturer who now never questions the weird and wonderful things we decide to immortalise in enamel!
How do you decide which celebrities to immortalise in accessory? Is it purely based on who you are a fan of, or do you take into consideration their wider popularity and significance?
A bit of both really—I only like drawing people that I idolise / enjoy / find funny, so there’s that, but also obviously at the end of the day I want them to sell, so it’s important that they’re people that mean a lot to everyone.
What does a normal workday look like?
Now that I’m not just a “creative” but I’m also running a “business”, my days look different to how they used to. The boring truth is a lot of my time is now spent doing admin, liaising with suppliers and doing bookwork. I’m trying to schedule my time a bit better now though, and block out chunks of time to just draw and create things. Otherwise I will probably go insane.
Real talk, who has sold more pins – Rihanna or Beyonce?
Queen Bey is queen for a reason!
