On March 17, our giant friend Jupiter was struck by a comet or asteroid at tremendous force. This sort of thing happens about once per year. It’s a big reason why Earth has managed to avoid living out the plot of Deep Impact or Armageddon.
The amazing part of this incident is that two separate amateur astronomers just happened to be filming at the moment of impact, and uploaded their videos to YouTube.
It’s only a brief flash, but considering Jupiter’s diameter is 11.2 times the size of Earth’s, we can appreciate that this explosion would have wiped us out. At the very least, it might have disrupted Netflix.
Even though this object wasn’t particularly large, it struck Jupiter at immense speed due to the gas giant’s super strong gravitational pull, which is 2.4 times stronger than Earth’s.
